In the area of research, social traditions (expectations of behavior, respect, and manners) are woven into the fabric of stories, songs, ceremonies, and festivals; one hears these and learns to behave accordingly. Since independence, a new wave of educated youth and those hopeful of economic success are striving to match the demands of modern technology. The rural environment used to be independent of and unaffected by urban and international lifestyles is changing (or has already changed) and young generation is comfortable in this new environment. Professor Tewari's Fulbright-Nehru research will seek to understand how much the pre-independent rural lifestyle is understood by the young generation.
